On this page, we offer some recommendations on how to best use the features within the site to establish a highly effective study routine in the months preceding your ABR oral physics exam.  We’ve included comments here as to how to begin when you subscribe, what a typical study session could look like, and how to best use our resources as you approach the exam date.  Note though, that studying is not universally formulaic.  We encourage you to modify and experiment with your approach using our materials in a way that maximizes your personal results.  We’re confident that the many features at ABRPhysicsHelp.com can be customized for you to help you reach your fullest potential prior to the oral exam.

This link is available in the QUIZZES tab.  For the most part, the quiz platform is self-explanatory, but the tutorial may offer you some further suggestions on the intricacies of the system.  This information may provide you with valuable insight which will help you take full advantage of the site during your studies.

Start each study session by considering the Exam Tip of the Day

Do you ever wish, in retrospect, that you could give your younger self the advice that you’ve garnered from an experience?  The Exam Tip of the Day is our way of doing that for you.  These jewels are small, fundamental packets of encouragement and counsel that we wish that we had known leading up to the ABR oral exam.  When you log in, you will automatically be taken to a page generating a random tip of the day.  We encourage you to spend a minute considering this advice and take it to heart as you pursue your studies or go about your workday.

Visit the Quick Questions tab

The Quick Questions are designed to be thought-provoking queries that are often cross-topic, multidisciplinary, and non-contextual.  We encourage you to visit this tab for one randomly generated Quick Question every time you initiate a study session and after you digest your Exam Tip of the Day.  The questions that you’ll find there are highly representative of the type of things you could be asked during your oral exam.  And, as in the oral exam, you will be asked the Quick Question cold.  That is, you won’t be warned that you are about to be asked a question regarding a specific topic.  The Quick Questions also include some random facts specific to our studies that you will hopefully find interesting and will help you further appreciate their related subjects.  The feedback from these questions has been intentionally left vague to encourage you to keep this question in the back of your mind during your day.  The more you think about a question, the better prepared you will be to deliver a well-developed response.

Select a Study Topic to Pursue During your Session

Visit the Study Topics tab to select a topic to pursue during your study session.  We encourage you to mix your studies up and don’t just start at the top of the list and work down.  Study whatever you are passionate about or something that is pertinent to your work duties that day.  The information will be more relevant, better retained, and will frankly keep you more interested in the information that you will be responsible for possessing.

Follow your study topic with the Associated Quiz

The link to begin the quiz associated with each topic can be found at the end of the study topic material.  It can also be found in a master list on the Quizzes tab.  Take the associated quiz, evaluate your performance using the interactive feedback, and repeat when appropriate.  Each time you repeat a quiz, you’ll experience a new question order, shuffled answers, and even new questions!  We’re not going for memorizing a multiple-choice exam here, but for a fully interactive quiz experience.  With the mix of questions that you’ve previously seen and new questions, we’re maximizing the balance between digestion and retention of the material.

Revisit previously taken quizzes and materials

Make some time during each study session to revisit materials and quizzes that you already feel comfortable with.  The quizzes are designed to be the perfect length (neither too short nor too long) so you can make time for quiz-hopping during your session as revisiting previously studied material will go a long way from turning short-term memory into long-term memory.

Cool down with a Quick Quiz

Select one of our Quick Quizzes to mentally cool down after your session.  These are specific to the ABR category with a few miscellaneous ones as well in the Quiz tab.

Here you’ll find materials that are relevant to putting the last touches on your oral exam preparation.  These include Practice ABR Oral Exam Simulations, Comprehensive Exams, and Exam Preparation materials.  We recommend that you start looking and familiarizing yourself with these tools around a month prior to your exam.

Build your confidence with a Comprehensive Exam

The Comprehensive Exam pulls questions from the whole scope of the material that you will be responsible for.  It is a great opportunity to engage in a timed exam after you’ve completed studying the materials to further help identify any areas still needing attention and to build and test your confidence with the Physics Oral Exam materials.  And, every time you begin a new comprehensive exam, you’ll receive a completely new exam experience!  Taking it multiple times will further refine your self-evaluation and help answer the all-important question: “Am I ready for the ABR Physics Oral Exam!?”

Familiarize yourself with the oral exam format using Practice Oral Exam Simulations

Keep in mind that this exam is as much about communicating your knowledge as it is about possessing it.  Don’t let yourself be stumped by getting into the exam and not being prepared by the challenging format that it presents.  We strongly believe in your need and right to have accurate expectations going into this exam, and this feature will help you along in forming this valuable foresight.  Trust us!  Knowing what to expect will lend you a great advantage towards succeeding in this exam.

To this end, the Practice Oral Exam Simulations lay out what a typical, complete exam could look like.  It is even timed to lend another layer of reality to this simulation.  We encourage you to treat it like it were the real thing, take the questions seriously, answer them practicing developing your ideas and communication skills, and review your performance.  Wouldn’t you rather test the waters a little before diving in!?
